Because centrism isn’t really for anything in practice the centrist stance is just to maintain the status quo. That rubs people who want to change things the wrong way If you were near the bottom of the political compass, it wouldn’t be too bad, but top center is just as tyrannical as top left and top right. Sounds a bit like conspirationnist mombo jumbo, but that’s actually why you see so much divide in every form of media recently. You’re busy fighting your neighboor because of race, gender, or identity while the ruling class sells your country, makes more money and leaves you with less and less protection as time passes by.

you’re a conservative that thinks people should have basic human rights or likes to get stoned (probably a libertarian or somebody that has money within a marginalized group of people.) you’re a liberal who likes guns or dislikes abortion (probably a leftist or somebody with residual religious guilt from an overly religious childhood) i’ve yet to meet a self described centrist that isn’t one of those things. the Htmx Pickle Shirt it is in the first place but ends of the political spectrum in the US aren’t really far enough apart for there to be something truly in the middle. They don’t commit. And if you don’t commit to either side it is tough to move forward because you instantly get pushback from the other side. They might be the most rational ones, but the fact that they are so rational makes them weak allies. You can’t accomplish anything with them because they compromise with both camps. Because they’re both self-serving. Anybody who tows the party line on every single issue, isn’t somebody I’m going to even bother having a conversation with. Sorry libs but it IS “both sides”. Granted, the Rs are worse, but there’s a lot to be desired out of the left too. It’s simply identity politics, “it’s my team” is much easier for people to understand than the actual issues. Centrism as a descriptive (i.e. – I agree with conservatives on X and liberals on Y, therefore I’m a centrist) is fine. Centrism as a prescriptive (i.e. – I try to lean towards the mid-point on every issue, or choose positions to try to find a mid-point) is dishonest and cowardly. Because it normally does something like this. “I’m a centrist, and not that into politics. Also I believe abortion is murder and our election was stolen.”
