TLDR: Birmingham is new and without a strong sense of local pride compared to other places its size. The world of the lord of the Rings is significantly based on Brum due to Tolkien’s childhood here (Old Joe as the tower of Sauron and moley bog as the ancient forests) The birth of a brilliant genre of music, heavy metal was forged here. Awesome music venues, arenas, old pubs, desi pubs and hipster breweries. Brilliant international Micheline star restaurants, more than both Manchester and Edinburgh. Countless innovations from modern tennis to the first clinical x-rays, and of course more canals than Venice haha. Brummies just need a bit more local pride and especially need to be more proud of other parts of Birmingham. People from Small Heath should boast about Bournville village. Bournville should boast about how Birmingham has the spookiest place in the UK (Aston Hall), Aston should be talking about the parks in Mosely and Sutton, Everyone already mentions the Balti triangle of course but they should do it more!

Probably boils down to the fact it’s the second biggest city in the uk but compared to London is has nowhere near the amount of opportunities or investment. Birmingham also got devastated in ww2, as did other Midlands cities like Coventry so that accounts for some of the ugly architecture. When it comes to aesthetics, many of Britain’s city centres look ugly and uninviting because a lot of older buildings were flattened in the Blitz and the buildings they were replaced with were nowhere near as pretty. Birmingham was particularly badly bombed, given it was Britain’s second most populous city and a hub of industry.
