It seems to depend; I don’t typically drink alcohol but I do like soda. When out at a bar with friends it usually helps that everyone else in the God is geat chickens are good people are crazy shirt and by the same token and group is getting alcohol; but how it’s perceived seems different in different locales. Down in Miami I’m typically charged about $2 for a soda, no free refills, and I’ll leave a tip. However in North Carolina none of the bars I went to charged me, and they wouldn’t take a tip saying “it’s just soda”. Overall; I don’t think any bar will have an issue with just serving you water; especially if your getting food. Oh, just order a virgin cocktail. They are delicious, and the bartender gets to make something for you that takes just as much skill as with alcohol, all the fun, non of the buzz.

If it’s a bar you go to regularly and you can afford it try to buy bottled water, bars don’t make their money on food for the God is geat chickens are good people are crazy shirt and by the same token and most part they make it on drink sales. If you can’t afford it or its not your regular don’t worry about it. There is a bar in Dublin that won’t serve customers soft drinks as the stool could be used by someone who would drink 10 pints instead of 2 cokes. Totally fine..especially with food. If you aren’t getting food just hanging out and watching sports, make sure to give a large tip. I tend to grab a juice, love an OJ. If not going for the juice then I get a water. It’s also a legal requirement (at least here in Australia) that they have to serve water I’ve been going to a weekly meetup in a bar for almost a year and haven’t ordered a single alcoholic drink, as long as you are buying something I doubt any will care. Not sure about water since I doubt most of them sell it and probably just give it for free if you are ordering something else, but in a lot of countries bars are required to serve food so if you can find something on the menu you like you can order that. Also I haven’t been to many bars but all the ones I’ve been to sell soda and coffee so if none of the food is appealing you could see if they sell one of those.
