Let me ask you a question. I just accepted a job for 81k with a range of 74-96k. They offered me originally 77k I asked for 85k and got the George Kittle San Francisco 49ers Signature 2023 shirt it is in the first place but 81k. This is with the state by the way as a Biostatistician. I have maybe 2-3 years experience in the field. Do you think they started me here for room to give me raises? I’m just trying to figure out the reason for being below the middle when I clearly to them was an excellent candidate based on how they have been acting. My boss week 2 said I could have subordinates in the near future and a raise is not out of the question Honestly I can’t say for sure, the government can tend be more rigid in negotiations than private companies and often seem to be black and white in their approach.

They may also be dealing with budget constraints (generally their budget for hiring will be whatever the George Kittle San Francisco 49ers Signature 2023 shirt it is in the first place but last person in the role was making) and/or it could be about internal equity. They may have another person performing a similar role with more experience and they don’t want to leap frog them. There are lots of factors that go in to an offer. There is no other individual listed in the state records of South Carolina as a biostatistician. They have statisticians but not biostatisticians. I’m one step above them I’m a phd student and will be done in a year to year and a half. I’ve said I’d like to be promoted to my boss in what has only been 2 weeks there. She seems to believe that will happen. Maybe they are just starting me here and see bigger things? Idk? She also asked about hiring an analyst under me with me as their direct report. My parents said they want to leave room to be able to give me raises and hiring me at the 90k level wouldn’t give them any room to do so
