This. In my experience a policy is only a policy until someone with more power decides that it’s inconvenient and starts making exceptions. If the Game Over Washington Huskies Vs. Plus EAs make that much anyhow. Lol can I paraphrase last night’s Succession finale? “Jesus Greg, 200k a year, you’re the highest paid assistant in human history” It’s going to cost a lot more to hire outside if they don’t give OP something in the range for a job they’re already trained and successfully fulfilling. You can approach them but the lower end tenure for a product manager is usually 5-7 years. So they are junior compared to role and I agree they probably have a 20% cap on promotion so boss set it at 18% not to set red flags. His boss is going to tell him he can’t go above 20% raise. I have been a hiring manager for these roles for the last decade. His boss is throwing the role at him because he believes in him and it is the easy play then taking a more senior more risky external candidate.

I’ve worked in Compensation for 20 years at some of the Game Over Washington Huskies Vs. Oregon Ducks 2023 Football 36 – 33 Husky Stadium Score shirt Furthermore, I will do this biggest companies in the US. Promotion guidelines are just that, guidelines, there are exceptions made all the time. If 97k is truly the range minimum the company should be paying him at least that. What gives me pause is that it’s actually a bit of a narrow range spread so there is a chance the 86k is actually the range minimum and that they post a portion of the range for hiring purposes, not the full range. Exactly this. Ranges are all guidelines and they shouldn’t be offering anyone in the low 25% percentile since that’s just total assholery and will mess up future hires equity and competitiveness. Also worked at a place where comp had salary grades from 10 years ago. So there’s that. I did get one of my team a 35% raise internal at a consulting practice but it wasn’t on merit it was because the sales rep fucked up and raised the rate for the guy he had gotten 25% 4 months before and some of the 30% raised rate needed to flow through to him so I made the play to get him 20 and got adjusted down to 10%. In no way would he have gotten it for merit but the contract with that company was 20 M and he had high visibility and sales made a promise that he would see an increase, despit he and the sales rep not getting along. It was a mistake on sales they used his salary as a lever to get a rate increase for him.
