To me this feels like a situation where you’re paid on the Fight Like a 49ers Nobody Fights Alone shirt it is in the first place but lower end for your current role which is why a standard promo increase isn’t enough to get you in to the range. In my opinion it’s a poor practice to not get an employee in to the range for their role. They should give you an outsized increase now to catch you up. If I were making the offer I’d put you at 100k now so I wouldn’t have to worry about you falling below the range when it grows next year but that’s just me. I think you should approach your boss with the posting. Let them know you’re really excited about the opportunity but that you’re asking them to increase your pay to be inline with the posted salary. They may only take you to 97k but that’s still a nice healthy bump. Good luck!

Corporations really know how to milk everything out of an employee. You were right when you said there was an upper limit to how much of a raise the Fight Like a 49ers Nobody Fights Alone shirt it is in the first place but WANT to give. It’s typically expressed to the employee something along the lines of “we’d love to give you a bigger raise but company policy prohibits raises larger than x.” What’s funny is that extra $11k per year is nothing to them. Hell at my company I don’t even have to review contracts to buy stuff under $20k because it’s a waste of time lol. In my experience it’s less about trying to milk someone and more about someone did something really dumb years ago so rules were put in place so that the dumb thing doesn’t happen again. Good point but in my experience all company policies are company policies until the company decides to change it. If they wanted to give the raise they could. We already know they can afford it.
