She said that I was the only one trying, even if he was paying (he kept showing up for the last five minutes only) and that I should leave him because he would probably never change. I’m told they do. My own couple’s counselor has said she’s worked with couples she’s told get divorced because empathy and love is gone. I saw a number of couples during my 45 years practicing as a psychologist who I referred to attorneys as they were so entrenched and so invested in their dysfunction that repair was impossible. The damage that they were doing to each other, not to mention their kids, was such that the humane outcome was to go their separate ways. No amount of therapy was going to dislodge them from their mutually assured destruction and I was not willing to referee their verbal brawls. I’ll never forget when our marriage counselor finally said “Can either one of you name one reason why y’all should remain married?” A liberating moment.

I told him from the beginning of our relationship that I didn’t want children and he assumed I would change my mind. He was bitter that I hadn’t changed my mind on children and was passively aggressively taking out his bitterness on me.
