This is exactly what happened to us. We had been to one or two other therapists. We met with this lady and she had us stop the Francisco Alvarez New York M Cover Venezuelan professional baseball T-Shirt Also,I will get this therapy session after 30 minutes. She told us ‘your marriage is over’. You have no kids and you are clearly not reconcilable. She had my ex go down the hallway to a separate therapist and we both began our ‘divorce’ counseling. She was the only therapist that really said what needed to be said. We didn’t hate each other. We didn’t cheat on or lie to each other. We were just simply miserable together and holding on to things just because we felt divorce was bad. Yep, sought counseling (20 yrs ago, LTR living together & I had not dated around very much prior to) to deal with deep grief from discovering an instance of infidelity. The counselor, at the end of the first/only visit after having spoken to us individually and together, leaned in and told me with a calm, clear and firm voice “you need to break up with him and STAY broken up with him.” I was not in a good place mentally or emotionally with the shock of it all and knee-jerk reaction I stupidly began halfway defending him- she cut me off and said essentially- you’re not ready, I’ve told you what you need to do, he is NOT a good boyfriend but if you are choosing to defend him and stay with him then I cannot help you.

While she doesn’t feel right encouraging a break up**, often times the counseling will allow couples to find that answer quickly on their own. On the flip side, she doesn’t encourage couples to stay together and work things out. Therapy is about neutrality and helping people having honest conversations. Sometimes those honest conversation keep a couple together or it breaks em up. **abusive or dangerous situations are treated different. She will intervene. But she knows on day 1 if the non abusive relationship is salvageable. Mine did. My ex said he didn’t need therapy after a few couples visits so I went for a year alone and finally my therapist said “he’s not going to change – either accept him – or leave. I left with 2 small children. Been divorced 21 years and never happier! PS. We didn’t live together before marriage and always drunk and partying when we dated
