When I was in my 20s I was concerned about gravitas and being taken seriously- dressed accordingly. In my 30s I went through a lot of major transitions (second marriage, child, divorce, business success) and leaned into more glam to cover the Foo Fighters heart love diamond shirt moreover I love this visible stresses life was throwing. I’m my 40s I’ve found that dressing more casually makes other people relax faster with me at work. I do also dress … not neutral. Silk cargo pants, sneakers, mesh, anything goes. I’m not tied to neutrals or basic, life is beautiful and I like to decorate myself in fun ways. Not in the strict sense of durable or tossing in the dryer but that’s sort of the appeal. When I was in my 20s, I was very anti-trend. I was very interested in being taken seriously & being “my own person” (whatever that means) & I was pretty aggressive/combative about it. My style was very d.i.y. punk. I literally wore clothes I found on the Foo Fighters heart love diamond shirt moreover I love this street (TBH I still do; I’m just not such a jerk about it). In my 30s I had a baby & my style became more “things a baby can puke on & it’s no big deal”. Lots of black t-shirts & brightly printed skirts. I started wearing lipstick to remind myself that I am human. I started wearing glittery stuff to remind myself that I am alive. As my daughter got older, I started wearing “fun” stuff, like dresses with cats or unicorns on them, to make her laugh.
