Many moons ago, I was a gofer at a hazardous gases delivery company and would run paperwork, invoices and safety sheets between the Cartoon Halloween Guy In The Box Shirt besides I will buy this office staff and the dock crews moving product. One day, I’m chatting with two secretaries; one of whom was black and the other white. Soon, it was time to go back out to the dock, and the poc secretary asks if I can take some tax forms out to ‘that dark man’. It just took a moment of thought to recall a Hispanic man who fit that description, and I replied, “Oh yeah, Juan!” …and she nodded. Suddenly, the white secretary pipes up, “Dark!? He’s not ‘dark’!”, while giving the side eye to the first secretary. To which, I was confused because, “Yeah, he is- like he’s been out in the sun a lot.” That secretary let it drop, but poc secretary was a lot nicer to me after that.

I feel this same way. I am never sure how to describe a person bc in todays world it’s bad to say anything like that. But like that’s the Cartoon Halloween Guy In The Box Shirt besides I will buy this only way to truly distinguish someone from another person. It’s a main descriptive word. I got chewed out at work once for being rude to a customer. She left a written report with the company and described me by my attire, gender and height. The only problem was, I, a 5’10” white, slim, guy was not the person she was attempting to describe but was instead my 6’3″, athletic, black colleague. We both found it hilarious and ridiculous in equal measure. There are some groups that don’t want to hear/use some words. And there are other groups that accept/use the same words. I remember use the word “black” to refer to one of my friends and a new guy in this group said that “black” is offensive, I should use “brown”.
