Nah not racist – but given I’m assuming you are not Black (and possibly others in the Collage The Office Stanley Hudson Shirt (watermarked) moreover I love this group aren’t either?) referring to someone’s race explicitly as a descriptor for them even when it’s not in the slightest derogatory, or racist can still be a bit jarring. Since black people are often targeted in violent, racist and negative ways for this aspect of their identity and being it can be a sensitive spot for others to also single out that aspect of their identity even for neutral reasons. If you’re in that situation again and other unique descriptors come to mind (“oh he’s the guy that always brings his trumpet to robotics?”) I’d go with those – it subtly but powerfully signals that you notice and appreciate lots about a person and don’t just see their race – which I’m sure is true

Collage The Office Stanley Hudson Shirt (watermarked), hoodie, tank top, sweater and long sleeve t-shirt

My (blessed with much melanin) co-worker/ beer buddy once described me to his friends as “He’s the Collage The Office Stanley Hudson Shirt (watermarked) moreover I love this white boy over there”. I was…..not affected at all. Sounds like your class mates are still learning to real life. That wasn’t racists at all. I get refer to as the white skater with half my mates, because I’m the only white dude. not hing racists about it. Don’t sweat the dumb things. If it doesn’t make logical sense, don’t run with it. All you said was descriptors that were true. A large black man, which when around smaller white men, makes it a good way to single out who you mean. My mother is a prime example, she whispers when she mentions our neighbours are two gay men. She isn’t homophobic but she feels like it’s a bad thing to mention it to people and they might see her as being bigoted. It isn’t. It’s the truth.
