The idea is to phase out money that doesn’t have much value because it lacks purchasing power. I wrote the OP you were responding to, and I absolutely meant that it is a waste of money to produce pennies and nickels. Pennies and nickels are rarely used to complete transactions. The purchasing power of the penny is less than that of a dime from 50+ years ago, back when you could actually buy something for a dime. Pennies don’t “buy things,” they cover the fractions of currency that do buy things. More often, they end up in jars, drawers, or on the ground, not actually fulfilling their purpose of facilitating transactions. The other aspect is that we don’t make pennies every 30 years or when the number of transactions involving them falls below some threshold. We make them every single year, in abundance, at an ever increasing cost. It’s a money pit that only gets deeper each year. As more people pay for goods and services with electronic transactions, the penny continues to fail in its intended purpose. This has been and will only continue to get worse.
