Being in a checkout line behind someone who spends a minute searching for and counting out pennies is a waste of everyone’s time. I’m not sure about you, but a minute of my time is worth more than a few pennies. That isn’t the Austin Reaves Los Angeles Basketball shirt and I will buy this reason. Our dollars last longer than 18 months, dollar coins cost more than 20 cents, a dollar bill only costs like 8 cents to produce, etc. These numbers are just all wrong. Dollar coins do not make the same sense for the US as other countries because our bills are much more durable than theirs. If you look purely at the cost factoring in replacement and such, bills and coins ultimately work out about the same. The GAO estimates from the time reflected this. The real benefit to the government is seigniorage. When the government produces a coin for 30 cents, they then get to buy $1.00 worth of stuff for it or “sell” the coin for a dollar. That difference in value the government gains is seigniorage. “Free” money. Now, the thing about coins is that people pretty often just throw them in a change jar. Or, if you were to make them a “series” that people might collect like a coins for every president, then they might get put in binders or drawers or whatever. All of which would have been great for the government, because that would take coins out of circulation. Not enough coins in circulation? Guess we have to make more and make more in seigniorage. Now obviously the government could just print money and sell it at any time but that’s highly inflationary. The advantage of this scheme is that it didn’t have the same inflationary effect as just printing money because it relied on money coming out of circulation (i.e. there isn’t more money in use, so not as much inflation). The GAO estimated that enough coins would be lost, collected, stashed that the government could make a lot more money in seigniorage than they could with dollars. And that’s why they tried it. It’s far more complicated than what most people chalk it up to.
Austin Reaves Los Angeles Basketball shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater and long sleeve t-shirt
2 days agoI remember having thoughts about needing some kind of “coin satchel”, but it ended up being not so bad. Now, I hardly use cash anyway, so no big deal even with $2 coins, and potential $5 coins some time in the Austin Reaves Los Angeles Basketball shirt and I will buy this future. The upside of $1 and $2 coins (and no pennies) is that a handful of pocket change ends up being quite valuable! A change jar can easily end up with hundreds of dollars in it.
