I’ve known several people who care about pennies quite a bit. Like, I’ll leave $0.07 on my end table and they’ll ask me if they can have it. The value of physical currency is not just its notional value, but that it serves as legal tender and a means of transacting. Pennies and nickels will be used thousands upon thousands of times. Counting that out would waste my time, the clerks time, and the time of everyone waiting behind me.
