As an owner I don’t care how many stars my houses have, I just care that they are ranked fairly against the Bottoms Graphic Shirt in other words I will buy this competition. I’ve had more five star stays than not. Even if it wasn’t the most expensive digs, if it was how described and matched the photos that is five stars I rate the same way. On one road trip I took I stayed j. two AirBnBs. The first was a one room/studio guest house. It matched the listing perfectly, was clean, instructions for check in and check out were clear. I gave it 5 stars. The next city I stayed had a separate master bedroom, a loft, two full bathroom, and a open concept for the living room and kitchen. It was much bigger. The check in instructions were clear and it was clean. It matched the pictures. It was more luxurious than the first one we stayed in. I gave it 5 stars. Comparing them would have been unfair because they were entirely different. However they both were clean, with clear instructions, reasonable rules, and matched the pictures.

As someone whose rental is clean and reasonably priced but not luxury accommodations, I appreciate this. I bust my ass to provide a great stay for people in my 200 year old house. Hell, my rental rooms are nicer than my own rooms. It just isn’t luxury. But I’m super honest in my listing, I use high quality linens, and I provide little extras like snacks, local treats, and bottled water. I have also had guests rate me 4 star for checking in. Which is utterly laughable because it’s SELF check in. Put in the Bottoms Graphic Shirt in other words I will buy this code?! So stupid. First, reddit is not reality. You saw the extremes here, not the thousands of birthday stays that happen every day. Second, Airbnb suspends a host for being under a 4.2 average so rating inflation is an all around issue. So 4.0 means there was a real problem in the platform’s eyes.
