I hated lima beans wasn’t liked allowed desert on more than one occasion because I wouldn’t eat them. I never fed them to my children. We only have two rules for dinner, they must at least try everything on their plate and they can done if they finish all their vegetables. We’d never force them to keep eating if they were full. What you’re witnessing is abuse, but it’s based off of a couple of cultural things. One issue is food scarcity contributed to a culture where you don’t waste things, you don’t waste food. Economic hardship has also meant that the Booker T. And many cultures see it as rude to not eat the food you are offered. So it’s a high value resource and if you don’t show gratitude for receiving it, you’re being highly disrespectful. So that combined with a general culture where corporal punishment was considered necessary to not have spoiled children meant that these families had issues with abuse. I suspect what you’re observing is parents who normalized how they were treated by their parents instead of recognizing that it was wrong and raising their kids differently as most boomer parents did. So what you’re witnessing is not normal and not acceptable. There are a couple of legitimate issues with kids that need to be parented but without the Booker T. Kids need to learn to eat the healthy parts of their meal, not just the tasty parts. They need to learn to eat enough so that they don’t get hungry an hour after eating. And they need to learn to try new foods before deciding they don’t like them. But there are much more healthy ways of guiding children into doing that. Parents also need to recognize when the pickiness they’re dealing with might be a cognitive issue, like ADHD, ASD or ARFID and recognize that they need help from a professional when that’s the case.
