By the Billy Talent Canadian rock band Check out the latest music T-Shirt besides I will buy this end of the campaign, the opponent who wanted to paint LBJ as a weak pacifist who couldn’t stand up to the USSR was left on the defense, responding to LBJ’s messaging, complaining about unfair campaign rhetoric, trying to convince people he wouldn’t actually end the world, and trying to show that he wasn’t literally mentally ill. It was the largest US presidential election landslide in a century. I think LBJ would be disappointed and familiar with the way US politics are now, but I think he might be surprised his obliteration of Goldwater didn’t kill off that side of the party. Still: it took around a half century for it to recover from what LBJ did to it. If you ever have the desire to read a political biography (and if you never do, you’re probably healthier and more well-adjusted for it, so fair play), then Robert Caro’s four-and-hopefully-five-soon volume bio of LBJ is the absolute gold standard. These books go into detail not just into LBJ himself but into all the relevant factors that made him. The rainfall pattern differences between east and west Texas, the workings of the US Senate and how it’s designed to be naturally small-c conservative and sluggish, how to rig a Texas election in 1948, and how the US south was a racist terror state for a century after the Civil War all get significant amounts of space just to explain how LBJ was the way he was (i.e. an incredibly hard working, and motivated and skilful politician) and how he did the things he did (and despite what I said about being hard-working and skilful, it’s far from a hagiography). Caro has spent nearly fifty years writing these things, reading everything in the archives that mentions LBJ, and even moving house to actually live in LBJ’s footsteps at times, and it shows.

I am currently reading “The Power Broker”, also by Caro (inspired by the Billy Talent Canadian rock band Check out the latest music T-Shirt besides I will buy this 99% Invisible podcast year-long read-along). I am wondering whether to tackle the Johnson books next – it seems so daunting, for a president I have no real interest in (and I’m Canadian), but Caro is an amazing researcher and writer so maybe I’ll give it a try. I think of Caro’s books as books about how political power works, rather than a story about some bloke or other. It’s just that the lenses through which Caro explains power are these two people who happened to be exceptionally adept at wielding power and getting other people to do what they want. He was a deeply flawed man and his foreign policy was a disaster, but one thing that can most certainly be said for LBJ is that no other POTUS made Congress work quite like he did. People underestimate how much LBJ was personally involved in getting every major piece of legislation passed during his presidency. Getting the Civil Rights Act of 1964 through despite significant opposition in his own party was no small feat and is a greater accomplishment than most Presidents ever achieve. It’s unlikely JFK would have had the same legislative success had he lived. Yes, and if he would’ve followed Kennedy‘s plan to pull out of Vietnam, he would have gone down as one of the greatest presidents of all time, but as it stands, he acquired a lot of blood on his hands when he double down on the Vietnam war and sent all those young men to die in a war that was no of concern of theirs. Not only that but he didn’t even run it through Congress nor the Senate, and instead claimed the war was a “police action” which was just completely undemocratic.
