That’s not really a fair assessment of Johnson. He was obsessed with power and doing whatever it took to get it and maintain it. Which included a lot of transactional politics and a lot of dirty tricks. I’d say McConnell is a close contemporary comparison. The most important advertisement of the election, arguably the most important factor in the entire election, and perhaps the most important US campaign television advertisement of all time, was only actually run once, at 9:50pm, toward the end of a Monday night movie screening on television. The emotional shock, outrage, media coverage and analysis, and furious discussion made sure everyone knew about it and was talking about it and the subject for the rest of the campaign. The timing of the one true showing itself, and ‘family’ film, was even chosen for shock value in hopes parents would still be watching it right after their children fell asleep, so they’d think of their sleeping children while watching the unsuspecting three-year old girl about to die in a nuclear apocalypse. It was so striking that TIME had the defining image of it as their cover… as news coverage, not an advertisement.
