I’d much prefer to have dimly glowing plants lining the Best it Looks Just As Cool When You Do It T Shirt also I will do this sides of residential roads and sidewalks than absurdly bright street lights, especially those newer white/daylight ones. In areas where there’s substantial road or sidewalk usage at night, like within the downtown of a city, near commercial buildings (especially bars), or parking lots, street lights (or something similarly as bright) would make sense to use in those locations. A plant cell with engineered bioluminescent organelles with something like an oxygen reactive luciferin (or other bioluminescent compound); also creating a molecular pathway for it to work and work with enough luminescence to effectively replace lighting is literally, at the moment, layers upon layers science fiction. I would imagine cellular respiratory energy rates necessary to produce such lighting would drastically reduce net-photosynthesis as well, especially if the pigment compound was oxygen reactive.

If we forget about replacing street lights, how feasible is it to create a tree or plants that emit some lights? I feel like there may still be some good safety functions for plants that simply standout from a completely dark background. Why use a completely inefficient and ridiculously expensive method when we could literally just put normal lights in, and transition to running our energy grids off renewables? We already have all the Best it Looks Just As Cool When You Do It T Shirt also I will do this knowledge and technology to do that and it would be substantially cheaper. Here’s the thing, bioluminescence is extremely energetically costly, and that means that pretty much all the energy this plant needs to grow will be spent on producing light. To even grow a small bioluminescent shrub could take years, not only that but it would need comparatively a lot more space. Beyond space it also needs the right amount of water, protection from pests and damage, and general maintenance, all of that is also extremely costly. Compared to just putting ordinary lights in and building solar farms it’s just beyond any level of reasoning
