Here’s the Nice jimmie Johnson Hendrick Motorsports Team Collection Navy 7x Champ Two-Sided Shirt but in fact I love this thing, bioluminescence is extremely energetically costly, and that means that pretty much all the energy this plant needs to grow will be spent on producing light. To even grow a small bioluminescent shrub could take years, not only that but it would need comparatively a lot more space. Can you give me some numbers to go with these statements? Like how much energy a plant can capture through photosynthesis vs the additional energy expenditure of bioluminescence? Because I really don’t know how feasible or unfeasible this is. And I know the numbers will require a lot of qualifiers like what type of plant vs where on Earth the plant is but just give me the numbers of the the optimal growing conditions if that helps simplify things. It is when that plant cost several billion to develop. Bioluminescence is very advantageous for some species, and for plants that rely on insect pollinators, being able to glow would, evolutionarily, be one if the best ways to attract insects, and yet they haven’t done it. Bioluminescence is only useful at night, and plants only produce energy during the day, so problem one is creating a means of locally storing this energy in the leaves near the surface so that it can be used at night. That alone requires more knowledge than we currently have. Not only that but to store the energy you need mass, mass makes the leaves thicker, thicker leaves are less permeable to light, and therefore don’t Glow as well. If you made the leaves less opaque that would help with light transmission, but the thing that gives leaves their colour is chlorophyll, if you reduce the chlorophyll then you also reduce energy production because that’s what they need for photosynthesis. Solving that problem alone would involve paying thousands of scientist for years years and years of research, as well as covering the cost of their consumables and resources (buildings, power, etc). These plants would come with a similar cost to cutting edge medical technology.

Now I don’t have numbers on the Nice jimmie Johnson Hendrick Motorsports Team Collection Navy 7x Champ Two-Sided Shirt but in fact I love this energetics, but just as a thought exercise, think about how slowly plants grow, that slow growth is their energy constraint. That’s them putting as much energy as possible into growth as they can, because in the plant world, whichever plant grows the fastest gets the most light and wins, so they grow as fast as possible. Now this assumes that the plant can spare 100% of it’s sugar’s for bioluminescence, in reality this would kill the plant, they need that glucose for respiration and growth. Let’s assume for the sake of me being able to finish writing this comment soon that we can simply allocate half the glucose to bioluminescence and the plant will simply grow at half the speed. So we need to grow a plant in with at least 6kg of leaves, now the highest % mass of leaves on a tree I can see is about 6% from this source , and the average looks to be around 2%, but assuming that we’ve got super leafy bioluminescent trees that means that they have a mass of 100kg. From the limited sources I could find a 100kg tree takes at least 55 months to grow, so at half growth rate that’s 110 months. So roughly 9-10 years.
