This is well said. We recently got a new GM who is so baldly sociopathic and incompetent that the Awesome scorpions World Tour 84 shirt and by the same token and whole staff wants him gone, and after several exit interviews I’ve heard rumors they may axe him, and have been asked to provide more information in my exit interview. Evidence does not support that. He’s trying to cancel vacation you planned –and made him aware of — 10 months in advance. 10 months notice! Why would he schedule a huge project for exactly the same time as your vacation? Unless he’s deliberately trying to fuck with you, I don’t get it. IMO, you either need to stand up for yourself and take your vacation as planned, or accept that regardless of how much notice you provide or how much money you will lose or how badly it will affect your mental health and relationships that your boss can (and will, as proven by this instance) just decide that you don’t get to take your time off. My partner and I are long distance so this trip will be the only time I have … [and] won’t be able to see him til the fall.

No. If your boss can cancel your time off entirely at his own discretion, there is no guarantee you will be able to see your partner in the Awesome scorpions World Tour 84 shirt and by the same token and fall, either. Those are not terms I’d be willing to work under. My inclination would be to tell the boss that it is his fault that he couldn’t figure things out in the last nine months, but that he still has over a month, and I have confidence he’ll figure something out that doesn’t impact my vacation. This. Your boss in all likelihood is messing with you consciously or unconsciously because he likes the control. I know a good boss like this too and he almost can’t control himself. A delight to work with when you are doing what he wants and as soon as you express any thing you need he goes into overdrive as to why you can’t have it. Yes, to all of the above. I would add that it’s probably time for OP to start looking for a new job. Not just because of the lack of flexibility or, rather, the ability to use their PTO, but it seems highly likely they’ll find something to fire you for when you come back. If your PTO gets rejected, they could count every day as a NCNS and then fire you for that when you get back. I’ve seen it happen before.
