You’re right. But I had a vendetta against a company and I will always leave a bad review on their Glassdoor, even if they create a new company under a different name. There’s a lot of other people like me considering every iteration of the company keeps getting bad review. Make ’em pay then. My policy is that I won’t always win, but I will at least rack up as many expenses as I can for my enemies when I lose. I don’t think it’s fair to say they were deceptive based on OPs side of the story only. Clearly there was a reason they thought OP would be interested in marketing, and hired them based on that understanding. Just because OP thinks they communicated that as effectively as they can does not mean they did. Miscommunication happens far too often on many levels, so it’s hard for me to believe that this was just their evil plan to hire someone with the qualifications, interest, and salary of a software engineering role and shoehorn them into a marketing position. It could’ve been the fault of OP, the fault of HR, the fault of the manager, but the bait and switch theory seems like a pretty absurd plan to hatch imo. Software engineers command higher base salaries. If anything it’d make more financial sense to do the opposite.

It sucks that OP was let go, but clearly it was a small company. It’s not like a small company can just offer up a SE position if they don’t have the budget/need for an SE position. Was clearly a bait and switch by the company. I’m upset that they wasted your time. You made the right decision. You wanted SWE/ data science experience and they were not going to provide that. I don’t understand the company thought process behind the hire. I’m almost as upset with the rubbish advice in the original thread. OP wrote three lines of text, but the top comment is talking about building stuff in Python on the job. A complete lack of reading comprehension. The literal title was “I got duped”. The second and third sentences were “Was told I’d do Data science and work with Python. Now I’m sitting at a desk looking for prospects for sales.” How were people misreading three lines of text so badly that they thought he got a computer allowed to download Python, much less an IDE? Even if his computer didn’t have many restrictions, in what world would a company clearly pulling a bait and switch allow him to code? This subreddit must be just unemployed college students and fledgling software engineers who’ve never had any other sort of job.
