I’m Australian. It would generally not be considered rude in Australia. I don’t believe it would be rude in the Atn News We Here For You Shirt and I will buy this US but I’m not American so it’s hard to be confident. The ‘call us African American’s’ approach by Jesse Jackson complicates it a bit in the US. I understand the term is losing popularity but is still a strong part of the cultural discourse. For those raised to call black Americans ‘African American’, using the term black may seem ‘wrong’. For some people ‘African American’ is so strongly obtained that they will use it for black people who aren’t American! Under all of this is a lingering consideration of ‘othering’. Would you describe somebody as that ‘white guy’? Under what circumstances? What are the implications? Can choosing skin colour as a descriptor ever be detangled from a cultures historical and/or current issues with systemic racism? Should we actively avoid using such descriptors or is that worse by making it an elephant in the room?

As a white person that moved from the Atn News We Here For You Shirt and I will buy this South to the West, I find white people out here tend to think describing someone as black is negative…growing up in the South where there is a much larger black community, describing someone as black is generally a neutral descriptor. If anything, many prefer it to “African American”. The only way I could see this as racist is if he was, for example, the only guy wearing a cowboy hat or the only guy in an orange jacket and you chose his to identify him by skin color instead. The tall guy, the fat guy, the black guy, the super smart one, the young one, the one with glasses, the guy who listens to rap, shit if you eat a lot of salad my brain will call you the salad one. People don’t like this, i’m sorry for people but equally if i was in a group of 6:1 black to white people i would equally say the white guy, so… no! it’s not racist, it’s effecient.
