I like my current jobs and am respected, but the Adult Halloween Walking Around Ringing Doorbells And Everyone Gives Out Beer T-Shirt and I love this company sucks ass as far as raises and bonuses are concerned. Found a new place for more. I gave notice. My boss’ boss said they’d match the new company’s offer. Being old, and believing the above, I said nope, and took the new job. Huge mistake – was a credit card processing company – NO redeeming qualities; fucking parasites. I was able to negotiate the same pay hike with my old company and was hired back. Lesson learned. Not me but wife- she stayed and got a 20% bump and promotions after – if you approach it with humility under “I want to stay but I have been approached and offered a higher rate, is there anything that this company can do?”

She then let her boss know that she was staying despite his counter being slightly under (it was like a grand) it makes the Adult Halloween Walking Around Ringing Doorbells And Everyone Gives Out Beer T-Shirt and I love this business feel good that you are staying and just getting what amounts to a market adjustment. So- don’t disclose the offer if you can help it and drive in the point that you want to stay even if the offer is just short. I didn’t it and regretted it. I didn’t ask for the counter. I moved because I wanted to work to more of a niche field and they had filed a position above me which I thought was key for mentoring. While, new firm didn’t actually have the work they said they did, and old firm hired some really interesting people. I missed the work life balance of my old firm. I accepted a counteroffer of a promotion 2 months later. I don’t regret it – BUT when I received another offer 14 months after that I did not even allow for a counteroffer and I am so happy with that decision. I accepted a 50K raise for a lateral position in a city that is 19% less for cost of living + higher bonus %. And within one year of that position I received a promotion and additional salary increase, stock and higher bonus. It’s not all about the money, but additionally that team DISBANDED in the past year and I would’ve been out of a job entirely. Hardest decision I’ve ever made, but truly one of the best.
