11 years ago, I started as a 12-month contractor at 80k. 2 months in, they offered me permanent hire for 70k with benefits. I countered for some extra PTO and 80k. They gave me the Be a goldfish happiest animal on earth T-Shirt Besides,I will do this PTO but stuck at 70k. They had me over a barrel. I was forced to accept, but the resumes started being sent out immediately. About a month later, I put in my notice, and they caved and gave me the 80k. It is a good company good benefits and I liked the job so I stayed. No regrets. I was out for over 2.5 months off and on with medical issues, doctor notes provided. Again, not all of this was at once. I requested a meeting for a raise after working at the place for 1 year 6 months. I requested this because I found out that techs, I worked for an MSP, were getting hired on at $18-19/hr, whereas I was still making 16.50. Manager brought up all my absences, I asked him to exclude the excused ones that used my vacation time and the times I was on medical leave, and his reply was “Here’s my counter offer, we don’t do that, we look at all the absences and you just have too many. How about instead of a raise we forget about these absences and you ask again in 4 months, then we’ll see about knocking your pay up to $17/hr.”

I was livid, went home, spoke to my spouse about it, and he straight up told me to quit. Went in the Be a goldfish happiest animal on earth T-Shirt Besides,I will do this next day, returned my shirts, and walked out. For background, I was promoted from lvl 0 to lvl 1 tech in 3 months, then placed at one of our customers locations as their onsite tech for a year. This was a contractually obligated placement between my company and the customer to have 3 techs onsite. I accepted a counter offer 6 months ago and have not regretted it. I seem to be in the minority here but it can work out under the right circumstances. For me I had a great relationship with my boss and was really happy in my role but was underpaid by ~$20k. I put in my two weeks and they countered with a $20k raise matching my offer. My boss also made it clear that the raise wouldn’t put a target on my back with him or the other directors and that they wouldn’t have offered a counter if they didn’t mean it. 6 months later and he’s kept his word. I’m still happy in my role and earning the market value for my position.
