I work for an airline & am occasionally deadheaded(flown as a passenger to work from a specific location) in uniform, making it obvious that I’m an employee. I learned real quick to try & snag a window seat if available & invest in a good pair of earbuds that can rest in your ears comfortably an entire flight. Generally, I love meeting new people! But when I’m stuck elbow to elbow with someone, head cocked at a weird angle, while they talk at me, it’s just grating. Some of these folks just want a captive audience. They see a worker who’s obligated to represent their employer in a positive light & use that as a means to hold folks conversationally hostage. Ugh. You’d have to sit there as they gradually got more and more inane and hear it all. They were strangers, so they were doing that whole half-drunk getting to know their new best friend thing. And they kept trying to include me in the conversation. Only time I’ve wished the plane would crash.

I felt like throwing up from my headache a few hours in. Yup, for me overly floral perfume gives me a wicked headache that absolutely will not abate until I get fresh air. I’m so sorry, that sounds awful. In my mind, they bought that “perfume” from the glass case up by the register at a thrift store. It’s been in the sun for 15 years and it’s half evaporated, thus doubling its potency. Look, this isn’t the worst per se, but until this happened, it wasn’t even something I would have considered before. On a long flight (AKL->LAX) I was sitting at the back of a 777 on the side so there were only two seats. The guy next to me was a very pleasant (and interesting) Brit. We talked for a while. He explained that (at that time) it was cheaper to fly to the Caribbean, buy a boat, and then sail it back to NZ than it was to just buy it there, so that’s what he was doing. I woke up 3 times during that flight with him dead asleep on my shoulder and “snuggling” with my arm (his hand in my armpit.) The fact that he was a heavy sleeper (I pushed him off me all 3 times and it didn’t even seem to impact his sleep in the least) probably made things even worse for me. At the end of the flight his attitude and demeanor hadn’t changed in the least, so I sincerely doubt he even knew what he’d done… As the person starts to lean over and “violate your airspace”, lean away from them. Once their “tilt meter” hits a certain angle, their body will automatically straighten up. Often this will wake the person up, which is kinda funny.
