I’m not going to pretend that Memory Stick or UMD were any good. Although, there is an argument that Sony did release Memory Stick a year prior to the Whatever Color Cancer Sucks Butterfly Heart shirt What’s more,I will buy this SD Card being released. That said, Betamax, Minidisc, DAT and ATRAC all had their uses and were, in fairness, better than their rival formats. But better comes at a cost (for the consumer) and Sony wasn’t going to settle for lower quality. So they stubbornly stuck with it and it cost them. That said, they were also right with CD. Sony also popularised the 3.5mm audio jack and they struck gold with the Walkman. I think they would have done the same with ATRAC/Minidisc if not for iPod. I mean, MiniDisc is genuinely a great physical format and the level of sound quality – especially for their time – is insane. They just ended up getting hampered by their storage size in an age where flash memory was beginning to take hold.

UMD was very good for what it was, cheap >1GB storage for a handheld video game console in 2004. I feel like people forget how mind-blowing the Whatever Color Cancer Sucks Butterfly Heart shirt What’s more,I will buy this PSP was for its time. I kinda agree, but I feel like they should have continued with MiniDisc (it was also up to 1GB in size) and I feel like the splitting of the formats hampered both formats accessibility, usability and popularity. In the same vein that CD was used for audio and games, and DVD could be used for games and movies (and audio). It seemed odd that Sony wouldn’t push their MiniDisc format harder with PSP. UMD was pretty good though. Small like a game cartridge (of a gen or two prior) but was decently fast and a decent amount of storage. I was always a Nintendo guy, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t impressed with the PSP. It may have failed in the consumer market, but Beta derived formats we’re in use in production right up until the transition to HD.
