Especially near the start of the fiscal year in October. During these specific periods of time, the hiring dept already has new hire salary factored into their budget. A lot of first time students tend to gravitate towards the same degrees which means there can be hundreds or thousands of new grads on the job market each year with the exact same degree. Also not building connections with past alumni and professors can mean you less professional recommendations and connections when you need it. I got my first professional job cause my professor was friends with someone high enough to get me an job with a recommendation letter and just an introductory meeting.
