Millennials were basically told that any college degree would get them a job and that was probably true for their parents, but was not true for them at all. By the 10s of thousands. Because they are now an expense instead of an income source. With all of these experienced people suddenly out of work, the competition for available positions becomes much stiffer, and the number of available positions a lot fewer. This not only lowers the salaries they can demand, but it makes it very hard for inexperienced college graduates to compete at all. Ultimately, the US government subsidizing companies that exploit us anyway is a bad idea, and we should never have had such low interest rates for as long as we did. But the side effect of correcting that is also a correction in the job market.
