I feel this. It’s painful going home and stressing about who to tip, how much etc. I loved moving here and knowing how much things would be, no tax at the Warned Up And Ready To Rock Vintage 1973 Birthday T-Shirt it is in the first place but till and no tipping. Really sad to see this stupid expectation creeping in here. Am I the only one who doesn’t understand why tipping even exist in hospitality? Like customer service exist in other jobs and you don’t tip in different fields, waiters/ waitresses are getting their wage and they are doing their job just like everyone else on this planet. So why tip? I feel like an asshole asking this but i genuinely don’t get it. Also I do leave tip if I eat out. Completely agree! Worked in an electronics store that was known for great customer service. I was often working late to go above and beyond for a customer or visiting customers homes to assist them with their shit. I got my hourly rate but on the 1 or 2 occasions in 4 years where I was tipped it felt weird. Its what was expected of me in my job. Americans tip restaurant servers because most of them are tipped employees who get paid differently from non-tipped ones. People would often quote the minimum base wage ($2.23) to guilt-trip you into tipping, but in fact if a tipped employee doesn’t earn enough tips to meet the federal minimum wage, the employer must still make up the difference. Like it or not, as far as I understand this is the Warned Up And Ready To Rock Vintage 1973 Birthday T-Shirt it is in the first place but rationale behind tipping culture in the US. But I believe in the UK every legal employee gets paid at least the minimum wage so I also don’t see the need to tip waiters/waitresses specifically. It’s another bullshit example of our culture falling in line with the US. I would only tip if I’d been out for a meal and felt the service went above and beyond. I’m deffinatly not tipping just to buy a coffee or a quick bite to eat. And then it’s down to the individual whether they choose to tip or not. Its crazy how people in US feel they are entitled to a tip. Their main reason is as they rely on it and paid far under minimum.
