Sweetgreen has less than 1000 locations. Chipotle has over 3000. They’re just bigger and trying to bully a smaller company. It’s stupid, but there’s a legal reason for it… Namely, if they don’t defend themselves against infringing uses of their trademark, they can lose their trademark. They know they will lose, but they have to go through the Vintage New York Knicks EST 1946 Basketball Team NBA shirt Besides,I will do this motions just to prove that they are defending it. Looking at it, it appears they managed to get just “Chipotle” as a trademark. That’s an insane move by the trademark office and never should have been awarded. You’re not supposed to be able to trademark single dictionary words, and definitely not generic ones. You can trademark generic words if they obtain a special meaning in the mind of the public. Apple is a perfect example.

I think you are misunderstanding their trademark. They have a trademark to that single word, but it is still restricted to narrow uses very close to their brand’s line of business. They can’t challenge use of “Chipotle” in a hot sauce name, a sports team, a cookbook title or delivery business. It would have to be a close enough usage as to be likely to cause confusion with the Vintage New York Knicks EST 1946 Basketball Team NBA shirt Besides,I will do this public such as in a fast casual restaurant’s burrito bowl. That said, they might still lose but Sweetgreen stacked the deck in Chipotle’s favor by using the same font and colors in the background of ads as Chipotle’s logo. They would lose their shit if they saw Cuchara, a literal Chipotle copycat chain in Korea. Inside design and menu are almost exact copies to where everyone refers to it as Chipotle.
