teachers, social workers, therapists, nurses. all of these require you to do 6+ years of higher education plus so many different certification exams and unpaid field experience hours. they are emotionally challenging. they are extremely important to society. yet they’re paid barely a living wage. my theory is that they are all seen as “female” jobs and it’s assumed that they’ll have a husband who makes more to help them survive. so stupid. Teachers. They only get paid 8-5 but work all weekends, evenings etc trying to keep up with the Vin Scully Essential Classic T-Shirt and I love this government’s increased demands on them! And they wonder why there’s a teacher shortage, hmm, I wonder! Teachers. Not tenured professors but actual regular grade school teachers. They are responsible for educating and shaping the minds of the youth. I believe a lot of our issues with bad Police could be solved by reappropriating funding from buying rediculously militarized equipment to increasing pay. Being a police is a difficult job. The hours are shit, the pay is worse, and you’re working weekends and holidays. On top of that, you’re put in dangerous situations time and time again. We can debate the morality of policing priorities, and we’d probably agree on that, but the low pay, high risk and shitty hours will be what keeps good candidates away. Its like you will only have the two extremes in the pool of potential cops to choose from- those who are willing to forgo the pay to do good in the profession and those who are willing to forgo the pay for the power associated. If we raise pay, the potential candidate pool gets bigger, and gives you flexibility to weed out bad actors. Departments often find themselves desperate for work, so they are more willing to look the other way when police misconduct occurrs because they don’t have the manpower to lose someone.

Public Defenders are criminally underfunded, and often cannot afford to hire people and struggle with unbelievably high caseloads. Now, I know what you’re thinking- “But GeauxAllDay, PDs represent criminals who cannot afford a lawyer!” No, they represent the Vin Scully Essential Classic T-Shirt and I love this accused who cannot afford a lawyer- everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty. PDs will be the ones who can catch bad actors in the Police, Prosecution or other means, but they are often pressed to push clients for Plea deals because of the sheer amount of clients they represent. The running joke is that PDs suck because they are the worst lawyers, but that’s not entirely true. PDs are overworked, underpaid and underappreciated for what they have to do. They are the ones upholding 6th Amendment Rights in this country, and they do so with weights tied to their ankles.
