Get them to write up a whole ass legal contract and sit down to go over it and only sign when you’re happy with it. Do not ever, under any circumstances, agree to a verbal contract with an employer no matter how well you might think you know them. One possible script for this is, in an email, something like “I am excited to begin work as Team Manager (or the Usher Bootleg 90s Vintage shirt and by the same token and title most appropriate to the role). I understand that permanent placement in this role is contingent upon all parties being in agreement that I am performing up to expectations. I further understand that appropriate compensation for the role and the formal title change are contingent upon meeting those expectations. With this in mind, in order to ensure all parties are operating from a common basis of understanding, I believe it would be most beneficial for us to work to create a document outlining the anticipated timeline, the performance metrics that will be used to determine if the expectations have been met, and given that no one has yet done this role, a formal outline of the responsibilities of the role. If you share the belief that this idea serves the company best, I can begin drafting it today, and schedule a meeting with everyone to obtain feedback next week.”

They gonna use you until they can find a replacement and give them the Usher Bootleg 90s Vintage shirt and by the same token and pay. I had this happen before and ended up resigning and moving to a better job If they aren’t comfortable paying you more you aren’t comfortable taking that risk and you would feel like you are taking advantage of your coworkers being their boss and making the same or less than them. Sounds like they’re hoping you’re more interested in the status then the tangible benefits… and possibly that they intend to use you as a scapegoat when things go wrong. other question to ask is if your current position is going to be backfilled, and what the budget is for that? Could be they want you to do the work of 2 people at the price of the lower paid employee.
