Dubya could speak Spanish and his brother Jeb! (who married a woman from Mexico) could speak Spanish as well. Mitt Romney (who was a Mormon missionary in France) could speak French so if Jeb or Mitt had won you would have had a bilignual president. Because there are intentionally very few barriers to anyone being eligible for President. While it will probably always be more likely that a President will speak English, it is possible, though unlikely, for someone to get elected who doesn’t speak English at all. As of 2016 my USA Flag Baby Billy’s Bible Bonker T-Shirt in contrast I will get this expectations for US President has become absolutely zero. It’s not a merit based position. There are literally no qualifications other then being above a certain age and being able to get votes. US Presidents don’t need to speak languages other than English to be effective leaders, though I concede that’s not a great answer.

However, I have a hunch that foreign policy issues aren’t that big of an issue to American voters, for one thing, so being able to communicate with foreign leaders in their native language doesn’t make a difference to American voters. Secondly, most other foreign leaders speak English, so US Presidents can talk to them. But there are so many languages spoken in Europe that a leader of a European country might need to speak 3 languages to talk to their allies and neighbors. Those guys aren’t going to want to talk to each other in English. The US is so important that Presidents can get away with only speaking English, and the USA Flag Baby Billy’s Bible Bonker T-Shirt in contrast I will get this rest of the world will accommodate them.
