If I’m heading overseas I want to experience that culture and environment, not replicate the Two Moms Are Better Than One Rainbow Lgbt Hearts T-Shirt moreover I love this one I already have but in a different country. Oh I’m not saying its better or worse, that’s all down to the individual experience. It is rational and practical however. If you plan to spend a lot of time out of the flat, often away for weekends, you have no intention of staying in the place for more than a year etc then you are a rubbish flat mate for a local household full of people who are building careers, saving money and generally doing career/life building activities (as opposed to OE experience activities). One group are planning for the future and one group is maximising the present. You may get a broader OE experience flatting in a predominantly local household but YOU are a generally worse experience for them, so you aren’t a great candidate. The result of this is clustering of working holiday tourists.

Fair and makes total sense for those with such desires or concerns. I was always straight up with the Two Moms Are Better Than One Rainbow Lgbt Hearts T-Shirt moreover I love this locals I flatted with, in total have maybe 5 years under my belt in such scenarios, and never had an issue but that’s subjective and I get your points. Tbh I found most places excited to have a kiwi stay, our reputation is still pretty solid, and found it no more or less transient than flatting here in NZ so never had this raised as a concern. Yep, as I said it’s not absolute, everyone’s individual experience is different. There are reasons why these trends happen though. Nope no matter how chummy you get, unless you are meeting some kiwis in as setting where they are also new to something (a new gym, new workplace) then forget trying to be mates. Sure you can be surface level mates, but you wouldn’t be invited along to events or get together a
