Gay people did not get so lucky, homophobes made our sexuality a big deal. They did their best to make us feel ashamed and conceal our true selves. The pride is not a pride to be gay per se, but pride to have stood up against prejudice and lived authentically. Many sexualities are shamed every day in every way. When they express pride in their sexuality, it is not to say “look how much better my sexuality is than yours,” it’s to say “I am not ashamed of who I am.” For me specifically I feel proud of everyone who came before me, some of which died, so I could have the right to live my life fully & not closeted. I’m proud to be apart of a resilient group, and honoured to walk in their footsteps. I hope that my pride, and the actions that come from it, will make it even easier for future generations to do the same. I’m also thankful to be queer. Love is a gift – feeling it is a gift, giving it is a gift, receiving it is a gift. I’m thankful for my capacity to love every gender & sex. I’m grateful that my capacity to love more people, and with less gendered/binary boundaries, than heterosexual or homosexual people. That plays into it. I feel that thankfulness because I feel pride, instead of shame, about my sexuality. I don’t feel demonic or perverse or dirty. I feel proud, which enables me to love being queer & feel thankful for my queerness, instead of hating it or wishing I was not queer.

(This is in no way meant to bash other sexualities or non queer people : my pride & thankfulness doesn’t detract from anyone else’s pride or thankfulness for their own gender or sexuality) I figure that when a segment of the Trick or Treat Give Me Something Good to Eat Pumpkins Halloween T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this population gets canceled for race, gender, or sexuality then there is a need to be seen as worthy of being who you are. Pride in one’s self is why. Usually as an approximation to happiness over adversary in life because of the very things various sources have told them to be shameful about. I hate my gender and no matter what I do I will always fall short of it, constantly, but that’s because I was made to feel that way for the majority of my life. I am who I am but my pride comes from my progress in life from where I started so a different kind of pride in myself that’s more experience based. It’s because for the longest time our society has demonized and shamed people for being anything other than straight. Now we live in a time where it’s slowly becoming more accepted and so people feel called to proudly express what society has tried to suppress for so long.
