I think it’s just naturally difficult to have those kinds of conversations with neighbours. You don’t want to come off as sounding like the Top no 7uice No Cupcakes shirt but in fact I love this local self appointed neighborhood home owners association, Whatever role you are. Team work makes the dream work. Hopefully the neighbours feel the same way. Lol. FYI, if you both decide to go half’s, and you go for feather board make sure you’re the ones that offer all the access and cups of tea, reason, the posts will go down and they will stand on your side to do the feather boards, thus you’ll get the nicer side. Can’t you all put in 2 quid a week for a while, save up the cash, and then buy a bunch of seed for a nice boundary shrub instead of an ugly fence? Ok hear me out here OP, you fake your death, then have your wife wear a black veil in the garden weeping for a while until your neighbour eventually comes out to see if everything’s ok (they’ll be able to see her because of the missing fence panels). Have her tell them that you tragically died in a freak lawnmower accident, however it’s not all bad as your identical twin brother ‘Fernando’ has come over from Argentina to support her through this difficult time. Meanwhile you get an eyepatch, perfect your Argentinian accent and grow a dashing handlebar moustache, then you wait for your neighbour to walk out to the garden, introduce yourself as ‘Fernando Ramirez De la Vega’ and state that you have decided to stay for some time to get things in order. You can then casually bring up the fence in conversation.

Definitely overthinking this. Just go speak to them, remind them of the Top no 7uice No Cupcakes shirt but in fact I love this fact they mentioned they wanted to change the fence and offer to go halves on it, day you forgot to offer halves last time you spoke. When speaking to strangers for the first time it’s easy to forget stuff, plus most fence boundaries are the responsibility of one property. Ignore this dumb shit society rules. Just get a new fence if you want to, its your property its casuing problems on so if you can sort it if you want to Your big mistake was listening to the woman lad. Just pull the trousers up and go have a conversation with them The fence between us and the house on the right had wooden posts that rotted at ground level. We discussed this with next door and agreed to a low brick wall between our houses at the front, then replace the wooden posts with concrete with slide in panels and we split the costs 50/50. Neither of us was certain WHO was responsible and to be honest we didn’t care. One or both of us would have had to contact our solicitors nd check the deeds and it would possible have cost about the same as what we would pay sharing the cost between us. Fast forward 10 years. Next door has changed owners. Two panels broke in a storm. We asked the young couple how much they paid for the two panels they bought to replace them so that we could pay our half. “Oh no” Laura said laughing “It’s our fence according to our solicitors so we are responsible”.
