This is probably common sense to a lot of you but as someone who is graduating this summer and never had an internship don’t make the Tom Holland The Crowded Room Movie shirt it is in the first place but same mistakes I did. I worked full time in a non-tech job while also attending school full time and mostly online and didn’t make much time for any of the extracurricular stuff or to on-campus events. I missed out on most of the on-campus career and job recruiting events because of my job and the one I did do I went on a whim unprepared. I actually had a nice talk with some of the recruiters there but since I didn’t have a resume to give them it was pretty much pointless, they’re not going to remember you and later talking to someone who does these events for their company they said they choose most of their interns or new hires for entry level positions from matching the resumes they get at these events to their online applications. And the online events I went to in my case felt very unorganized. Again probably obvious to almost everyone here but for any students who think they just don’t have time or maybe their schedule doesn’t line up or they’re not that important, make the time.Only attend if they have real roles available. Lots of companies attend, show interest and don’t have any roles open. It’s all PR to them. Outside of that, there’s no real point. Company mixers / events, though, always attend. That’s where the real networking takes place.

Most competent college career centers will identify and share which companies have open internships and/or full time roles available. They’re more interested in big names to attract people and sponsors than they are about landing you a job. A job offer is just a bonus to them. If you want to succeed in your career, you have to find a way to diversify to the Tom Holland The Crowded Room Movie shirt it is in the first place but people who: a). have jobs available and b). can vouch for you. Unfortunately, we live in a society where there are too many people in this field. Referrals are liquid gold rn. I’ve been to a bunch of non-school related events / mixers that have yielded me more interviews than “blind” recruiters that don’t have anything for me. Outside school mixers have a bunch of VPs / directors / managers that hold much more weight than a recruiter. My college was pretty on top of making sure companies were there to actually recruit. They’d cut companies off if they heard too many complaints from students.
