Horse meat is delicious. I had it in Germany. But Pittsburgh has a lot of dumb slack jaws living here I keep learning. I’ve even seen it a few times in the Tis The Season To Be Jolly Xmas Skull Santa Hat Spooky Christmas T-Shirt it is in the first place but company restaurant in Geneva (Switzerland), athough it was a few years ago. I prefer ostrich. Had the same horrified reaction from an american couple i met while travelling in morocco when they found out my favourite dish from back home in egypt was rice or freekah “basically wheat” stuffed pigeons and rabbits. Apparently its very rare in the US for people to eat pigeons or rabbits that much across the pond Living in Europe my entire life, traveled quite a bit around – I think “staple” is really a bit exaggerated. Sure, there are places where you get it, but at least in western Europe, it’s not that common.

You sure its not because they’ve been bred to unrecognizability by humans on a continent where horses didn’t exist originally? (Or rather where they did exist and went extinct because they weren’t able to adapt, long before settlers from th east (europe) arrived? I’d rather eat horse meat than rabbit meat. It’s a personal thing, tied to how each person perceives each animal species. I would never eat a dog but most chinese people would. I do not judge : the Tis The Season To Be Jolly Xmas Skull Santa Hat Spooky Christmas T-Shirt it is in the first place but only thing that matters is if an animal is treated decently. Anything alive can be food. Humans as well (bear food, shark food, crocodile food…) I grew up in Paris in the late 1970’s and 1980’s. There were always butcher shops that were right next door to each other one was a traditional “charcuterie” butcher shop with beef and venison, rabbit and poultry and then there was the horse meat “chevalerie” butcher shop. It was completely common and normal practice. Horsemeat is a bit tougher but not seen as “wrong”. Somehow I don’t understand the logic. Either you eat animals or you don’t. People aren’t all up in arms that people eat cute furry bunny rabbits, or Wilbur from Charlotte‘s Web. Making a distinction between which animal you eat is strange to me. Obviously I guess people are making the distinction between domesticated animals vs Farmed animals for consumption. We don’t eat dogs and cats and pets and many people have horses that are domesticated. Nobody is going to steal black beauty and serve her up for dinner. What the heck do you think venison is? Bambi. Or Veal? I’m not saying that I eat all of these meats myself but I’m just saying that there is a bigger argument. Also goes to what part of an animal you eat. It was very common in France to eat tongue and calf brains. I lived in Hong Kong for a long time and they serve duck feet and it’s common to eat the eyes of animals. I guess I’m just trying to wrap my head around the fact that if you will eat a rabbit that is farmed for consumption but not a horse, where does that distinction come from? I don’t have the answer I’m just putting it out there. PS I’m not a vegetarian.
