I ate horse tartare at a networking event around 2018. It was a wine tasting networking thing. Anyways I liked it a lot. Until I knew what it was. Then I was a bit put off and I’m not sure I’d try it again. But to be fair I don’t like beef tartare either. Geez, this reminds me of the movie “McArthur,” when Gregory Peck’s title character felt bad for accusing the commanding general he left behind in the Phillipines of cowardice. Later, as they prepare to sign the documents reflecting Japan’s surrender on the USS Missouri, the maligned general is walking with a cane and tearfully explaining how his men had to “eat his horse.” Where I come from (Europe) its considered the cheapest meat and nobody wants to eat it. No idea why they call it a delicacy. You find it nowhere in a store. I dont even knkw any dish that uses it If its because you think theyre cute, why is there no outrage about eating beef? cows are 1billion times cuter than horses.

Horse meat isnt a delicacy in much of French Canada, that TIL is just wrong. It’s just so wierd exotic meat that not many particularly enjoy. I can’t understand why ppl are opposed to this while simultaneously munching on a delicious ribeye. It’s all meat, and frankly I’d be game to trying just about any animal. I’m European, and it’s not a delicacy or a staple. Some people eat horse meat to be different and defiant to society, and the vast majority look down on it. In Finland horse meat is found in most larger supermarkets as cold cuts. Finding horse steaks is more rare but still available in butcher shops. just a clarification…horse meat is NOT a staple anywhere in Quebec. it is a specialty item and rarely eaten. it’s much more popular in French speaking Europe and while some Quebecois may eat it on occasion it is nothing like a staple I’ve seen it sometimes in grocery stores, I’ve had it once in a specialized tartare restaurant, and I don’t know anyone who eats horse. It’s tough meat, not particularly tasty, and just not appealing to most. French-Canadian here: no, horse meat isn’t considered a delicacy at all by the general population. There was also a “no horse meat” implemented in Montreal back then. In French Canada? I’m Canadian, although in Ontario, I’ve never heard of anyone anywhere here eating horse meat.
