“You must eat all the This Is Our State Is Arizona Cardinals Shirt and by the same token and food on the plate even if you’re already full and never wanted it on your plate in the first place” is a lingering tradition from the days when food was scarce. If you wasted food in those days, it might contribute towards them starving to death in the winter. Insisting on it nowadays is more likely to lead to obesity than anything… There are less abusive habits that look similar, though. When a child decides on a whim that they won’t eat vegetables ever again because they want to leave more room for ice cream, it tends to lead to a very similar battle of wills. That sounds pretty extreme, and I agree with others that it sounds like abuse. For me, it was “if you’re full and only took a few bites, you’re not getting desert later because you just said you’re full.” This is what I grew up with and seems almost perfectly reasonable. Addendum: the goal should be to incentivize your child to eat a healthy amount of what you provide them. In my case, the incentive was desert, and the only way to get it was to eat an appreciable amount of dinner. You could even come back to it later if you were genuinely full, there was no punishment to not eating, you just didn’t get desert until you did. Looking back, this was very effective.

A lot of them aren’t. My mom never forced me to eat. When I said I was done eating she’d just cover it and put it in the This Is Our State Is Arizona Cardinals Shirt and by the same token and fridge and say I was welcome to finish it later if I felt hungry again. My mom used to say…. “I worked for the money to buy the food. I went to the grocery to purchase the food. I stood here and cooked this food. I will have to clean up the mess of the food. The least you could do is eat the food.” And she was right. But she knew what I could handle. And once the kitchen was closed…. It didn’t reopen until breakfast I don’t force my kids. I do make them at least try everything on the plate. Then if they aren’t hungry then they don’t have to eat. I always tell them to listen to your body, it knows what it wants. I don’t know why people do that. I give my daughter kid-sized portions and if she wants seconds, I give her seconds and if she isn’t hungry and doesn’t want to eat at the moment or doesn’t want to finish her food, that’s fine, I don’t force her.
