I’ve been using uBlock since youtube decided to lose it and beyond the They Hate Us Because They Ain’t Us Cowboys Grinch Santa T-Shirt moreover I will buy this one or two times that youtube has updated as I wanted to watch something – which an incognito window solves for the moment – this is far less of a disruption to my daily usage than actually watching ads. Right, because the whole concept of a browser is that you are downloading the entire html content from their server to your computer (the browser app) and then the app chooses how to parse, display, view, use, etc the content. Its design gives companies very little control over the content once it leaves their servers, so extensions on your browser always have the last say in removing annoying features. This includes blocking your browser from sending requests back to youtube servers, showing popups, downloading code, etc etc. We have final control over what appears on our browsers. I’m sure they could maybe work out some horrific system that is harder to defeat (like have some obfuscated time based javascript be part of maintaining a valid youtube session, so that you are logged out / unable to download vids if you don’t watch the ad properly) but it would probably create nasty side effects and occasional bugs for normal users not using adblocks.

Edit: Actually after reading the They Hate Us Because They Ain’t Us Cowboys Grinch Santa T-Shirt moreover I will buy this ublock origin threads about this, I think that actually IS what youtube is trying to roll out with, and the UBO devs still defeated it. Would cost an enormous amount to do, and if it gets defeated by a bunch of people writing to open source code, you are back at square one. It helps that these companies run on ‘freemium’ models where they WANT huge amounts of users accessing it for free, so driving away everyone using an adblock would destroy their business model for now. It’s amazing how almost all the replies are things the uBlock Origin developer team calls out as wrong, or wrongheaded. And Youtube isn’t “catching on”, because that’s also covered in the r/uBlockOrigin pinned guide. Youtube developers push a new update, and then the UBO developers need to update their work, so there isn’t 100% uptime on a fix.
