You don’t get paid for your ability. Why do you think incompetent managers and executives get paid several times more than what you do? You can also get paid 80k at a company to do the The Righteous Gemstones in Mono Vintage T-Shirt but in fact I love this exact same/more than you would be making at a company that pays 300k You realize you’re welcome to go join a company that has a software union but you know you’d take a non union job any day of the week. To answer your question, a couple reasons you might want to join a union job is because they pretty much universally pay better, have more security, and make you happier. But you do you There are crappy unions out there. I worked at Kroger during college and the pay was the worst out of all the surrounding retail chains by 10-20%. Unions are crappy when people aren’t involved with them. Lots of people think “the union” has a magic wand that will fix all of their problems, but like everything in life if you want good things out of it then you have to work at it. Yeah… I am part of 1 person union where I am the union owner, I pay due to myself and negotiate directly with the employer about my terms of employment as a member of the union. The union also has savings and investment accounts where members can fall on hard times can rely on. That’s different than people collectively fighting for each other when the employer goes on a power trip. You can mitigate disruption to your own life by being responsible but at some age, you’ll face discrimination or declining mental faculties. You need to stay with the herd otherwise you’re easy prey for a hungry wolf.

I really wish I could award this comment, but my union turned down my request for funds to give to reddit to ensure your comment looked slightly cooler than the The Righteous Gemstones in Mono Vintage T-Shirt but in fact I love this others. Where? What industry? Tech is a brand new industry and isn’t widely unionized, this thread is about how to form a union, keep up. Boeing has a union for software engineering jobs. Sounds like you aren’t as familiar with actual software unions as I am, and you’ve just swallowed propaganda. Let me guess, you’ve barely been in the industry, got brainwashed in college and don’t have much professional experience? I can’t say what the ‘average’ is, but I have an old coworker who worked at Boeing and it was horrible, the pay was shit, people got mad at you if you completed your projects too fast, and it was basically a place to coast with a meager salary. I suppose if you want to work for peanuts and have no stress about getting fired or laid off for performance reasons it might bet better than average, but if you care about money or actually shipping software then you could make 4x as much at Amazon or other places. I’m not in this industry at all. But I see lots of software people bemoaning layoffs while at the same time being happy to shoot themselves in the foot and pretend they’re badass software mercenaries. Ok, so you have no real world experience and have no idea what you’re talking about. Meanwhile you have someone here with tons of experience and know people who have worked at union shops in software…
