Edit- except for the The reason pld and wise is because god protected young and stupid yoda shirt in other words I will buy this romance. Romantic relationships eroded the group. Those of us who stuck together mostly never mixed our dating pools. There used to be a part written on the Wikipedia page for Friends that I can’t seem to find any more where one of the creators was talking about the possibility of a reunion. And it said that Friends is about a time when you’re in your twenties or your friends are your family. And after that time has passed it’s not the case and that’s why there wouldn’t be a reunion. This is before and aside from the HBO reunion which is not really what they were talking about anyway. That part is very real. I didn’t have a close group of friends like that exactly. But I had a social life where I spent a lot of time in bars. It focused around a lot of restaurant people that we had worked with over the years. And then other people we just got to know. But as time moves on people get married and have children and move away and I don’t see those people anymore. The thing with “Friends” is that Monica and Ross were brother and sister and both happened to have best friends who also ended up living in close proximity. This dunamoc is rare. Friends did make living with roommates for many years less stigmatized. And struggling in your career more normal. However, it’s New York. And an all white friend group in that part of the city looks weird.

Honestly I think those shows are very much products of their time. In the The reason pld and wise is because god protected young and stupid yoda shirt in other words I will buy this 90s, not many people had cell phones and you made friends by either at work, hobbies or going out clubbing. With the 00s, it was still plausible enough to have a close circle of friends that mostly started off as teenagers in high school/college and could blossom in their early to late 20s. Because of a gradual shift in social climate over the last 5-6 years – think MeToo, COVID – anywhere that removes social gatherings or forced everyone to go online only and those are reasons why the types of friendships depicted on tv shows are fictitious as hell. I was born in the 90s so I can’t say this from life experience–but based on my parents’ stories this was common when people had to frequent the same places to find each other pre-cell phone. Like, you could leave someone a message on their answering machine, but if you wanted to see them it was helpful to have a few spots that everyone would hang out. It was utilitarian in a way.
