Eisenhower once said, “The middle of the The Nooo Face! Shirt But I will love this road is all the useable surface. The extremes of left and right are the gutters.” If you even HINT that you see ANY nuance in a controversial issue; you are COMPLETELY guilty and ABSOLUTELY sympathizing and 100% supportive of the side opposite of me!!! Because the far left and right view the other side as an existential threat to their way of life. So, if you’re not with them, you’re essentially helping the enemy. At least that’s how they view it. Meanwhile, there are some who falsely believe that centrism means just taking a middle position on every issue, including those of morality, but that’s generally not the case. Most centrists have strong opinions and principles, but hold a combination of liberal and conservative views depending on the issue and that combo places them toward the center of the political spectrum in aggregate.

Naah. Bigotry is rarely laser focused. You don’t meet very many people who are really antisemitic but also support LGBT rights or Black rights. You meet someone who’s antisemitic and they’re most likely going to also be racist, homophobic, misogynists. No guarantees of course, peoplare varied. But I know which way to bet it. The reason we have the The Nooo Face! Shirt But I will love this concept of “left” and “right” is because beliefs tend to cluster. The left/right split notes the clustering of beliefs based on the question of whether a person believes hierarchy is some combination of necessary, inevitable, good, and beneficial, and those who don’t. So sure, it’s POSSIBLE for a person to be a rabid forced birther who is also in favor of LGBT rights and things white supremacy is bad. But it’s not likely. A majority of centrists/moderates are pro choice. And among those centrists who are personally or morally opposed to abortion, many nevertheless think criminalizing the procedure has little or no impact on actually reducing its occurrence and therefore take more of a “safe, legal, and rare” position. And even the minority of centrists who do want legal restrictions on abortion, most of that group still want exceptions for rape, incest, and life of the mother.
