The most common form of centrist or moderate is fiscally conservative but socially liberal, yet their are other combos as well. The key is that each issue should be evaluated on its own merits rather retreating to to partly lines on everything. You just described the The Potions Master Shirt and I love this Democrats. “Socially liberal and fiscally conservative” I mean. The Republicans spend like a drunk frat boy with daddy’s credit card. Biden’s agenda in particular is very much in the mold of FDR or LBJ. Big social safety net provided by taxpayers and wealth redistribution via the tax code. Bottom line: Trump added $8 trillion to the national debt in just 4 years, but Obama added $8.4 trillion in 8 years and Biden is on-pace to add at least another $4 trillion in his first term. Not sure how we’d call annual deficits that top a trillion dollars, “fiscally conservative” regardless of which party is doing it.

Right now there is one system trying to completely move the The Potions Master Shirt and I love this US to a fascist state. If you support this then not supporting it eventually will be seen as a crime and you are an enemy. Contrary opinions are not allowed. The other side is trying to block the move to fascism (not necessarily very well) but any vote not for them feels like a vote for the system trying to remove them. With the winner take all political environment neither side wants or can allow a third view because to do so directly supports the other side. In less radical times it matters a lot less. Because not everything deserves the compromise of a middle ground. Sometimes one side is actually in the right on an issue and giving undue credibility to the people opposing gets in the way of the right thing being done. Imagine being a centrist in the time of slavery. There’s no middle ground there. Both sides frankly don’t deserve to be given equal value when it comes to literally owning people.
