What cracks me up is that people think things will be business-as-usual in 2061. Don’t worry, none of us will have public pensions. We’ll be praying for rain so we can fucking eat. France is an interesting situation, having lived there I can tell you it’s brutal. Rather than retiring at a particular age it’s actually based on how many years you work in your job. If you are a woman for example and have to stop working for a time to bring up kids you either have to work more years or take a lower amount when you do retire. Some people are getting much much less than the The lord is my shepherd i shall not want sunset waves T-Shirt and I love this minimum wage on their pension and some people are getting many times the minimum wage. The French system is very unbalanced and leaves sick people and women out of pocket.

How about the The lord is my shepherd i shall not want sunset waves T-Shirt and I love this government steps in and controls the critical industries that people need to survive, and stop them making record profits at our expense. One of the other factors is the reduction in the work force – so there’s the ~50% increase in required expenditure (from 4% to over 6%) compounded by lower tax take from a shrinking workforce – basically, we need a lot more money, and it has to be found by less people. I’m approaching forty, so retirement is a way off for me – but NZ should either raise the age of eligibility, or means test it (I’d prefer means testing) Shrinking workforce? We’ve doubled our population in the last 35 years. Lower tax take? Taxes keep going up. GST, gas, cigarettes, land taxes, capital gains, blah blah.
