They did talk about means-testing and potential raises as solutions, the Test Day Fine Everything Black Cat Colors Stressed Cat Teacher T-Shirt and by the same token and guest just didn’t agree those options were needed. Yeah I guess that is correct. But the comparison with France is also quite off because our number doesn’t include KiwiSaver and thus is much lower. In the end we have to pay a lot more than just 4% it just isn’t visible in the statistic. For the record I agree that Super should be looked at closely, and I do think that this podcast was a little one-sided. I definitely understand why an increase in the age would be hard to stomach though especially for working class people and those with physically intensive jobs. I work with a number of 65 year old plus people. They are on $90,000 plus salaries. On their own houses plus investment properties. The penson is their new car/holiday fund. IIRC we tried but those in the best postion NOT to need a pension at all were able to find work-arounds to keep getting it (because they can afford accountants to do so) so the impact was not as expected. Those working and earning 90k aren’t dodging tax this way usually. It’s the ones who own the company and earn (and have) the real big dollars. What’s to stop them from registering a business, then working as a contractor and leaving the profit within the company until it can be effectively distributed?

This is already a pretty common setup for people who plan on not working soon as the Test Day Fine Everything Black Cat Colors Stressed Cat Teacher T-Shirt and by the same token and funds can be distributed in tax years where your income is in a lower tax bracket. Or to other shareholders that might not be working/are on a lower tax rate. Because you’ve just described a main voter base – rich old people who want more expensive shit to leave behind to their families when they die. I’d love to see it means-tested, too, but I struggle to imagine how any party could even suggest it without losing favour. We’re trapped in a cycle where privileged older people vote more reliably than anyone else and they’re gonna vote for policies that give them more at the expense of those lower on the socioeconomic hierarchy. The cycle will be self-perpetuating once our social safety nets are eroded enough that those born poor here won’t have the energy or opportunity to learn how things could be different, or the time to make it happen. Are we there yet?
