Also a huge chunk of americans learned spanish either from a parent or from their elementary school or from the neighborhood they grew up in, so spanish is not a “new” language to them. They’ve already known it their whole life. Come to California. Even if they don’t speak it fluently, most people here know enough Spanish to ask basic questions or convey basic things. And knowing the fundamentals makes it a lot easier to learn. A top of the line smart phone is so impressive its mind boggling. They will instantly turn all written words anywhere into english words. You dont even need to take a picture. Just open the translate app and tap on camera then whatever your phone is pointed at will change the words right on your screen instantly. Here. Not only is it the most common foreign language taught in schools but it’s also the most common first language for people other than English.
