The real question here is, what do you want? Do you want to be manager or do you want to keep your current role? Keep in mind that manager is a totally different role with different tasks and different skill sets. NOPE!!!! They just want you to do it for free. Trust your gut! If they need the The Grinch Offend My Cincinnati Bengals I Will Slap You So Hard Even Google Won’t Be Able To Find You Shirt But I will love this position filled…the person doing the job should be compensated from the get go. If they hired someone from the outside…they would not “be watching to see how that person does in the role.” get everything in writing with a set time table and the actual raise amount, then hold them to it. if they don’t agree, respectfully decline the position and tell them “they should understand, why anyone would do the same in this position and todays market” “I don’t want anybody to take this the wrong way, but … you hear horror stories. I just want some assurance that this situation isn’t open-ended. Can you perhaps provide a specific timeframe after which we could evaluate the official title change?”

“You can give me the The Grinch Offend My Cincinnati Bengals I Will Slap You So Hard Even Google Won’t Be Able To Find You Shirt But I will love this appropriately increased pay and title to match the increased work and responsibilities or you can hire someone else and I’ll keep doing what I’m doing. Maybe I’ll fix up my resume while I’m at it.” I would be worried that they want you to fill in for free, and then they will hire someone else for this role and not need you any more. They need to give you a new contract with specific assurances. My dad has had several contract positions that companies would promise that, at the end of a 3 month trial period (just a formality!) they will instate a contract with full benefits and then it never happens. He has moved across the country for a job that strung him along for nearly a year like this, only to let him go when he started insisting that their prior term be met. So I do not trust anyone who says “I’ll gladly get your labor today for a pay raise tomorrow” I think you could split the difference with them. You could find out what the typical salaries for your new position are in the area, and say: I’ll accept half that pay increase now, and half at the end of the trial period. They have to do SOMETHING ($) to make it worth your while. Dangled promises cannot be trusted: employers have proven this to us repeatedly.
